I am so fortunate to have a group of like-minded friends, who love finding new places to eat as much as I do, and we’ve got spring fever.
But we could use some help . . .
We’re in the car.
We’re ready to go.
We're hungry.
We want something good.
Really, really good.
A local favorite.
A specialty of sorts.
Off the beaten path.
Not to be missed.
Known by reputation.
And word of mouth.
Unusually good.
Or maybe just unusual.
So what’s it gonna be?
Where do we go?
How do we get there?
When’s the best time to show up?
What do we order?
What are the local customs?
Who are the characters?
We’re open to suggestions.
Anywhere in Southern Illinois.
The neighboring states.
All 50 states.
The world even.
We all travel quite a bit.
And we wouldn't want to miss anything.
And we can always eat.
Our usual starting point is I-57 at IL Route 13.
That’s only a point of reference.
We’ll go anywhere the food is good.
We don’t mind traveling back roads.
Or gravel roads.
Or dirt roads.
It's all about the food.
So how about it . . .

I suggest taking a road trip to Michigan. The climate is much nicer than southern Illinois in the summer! Tony's in Birch Run, Michigan, is a must for the BLT lover. They use a whole pound of bacon for each sandwich. Don't even think about the banana splits!! Go north on I-57 to Mt. Vernon, Illinois; east on I-64 to Louisville, Kentucky; northeast on until you hit I-75. Take I-75 north through Ohioand into Michigan. Continue north through Detroit and Flint to Birch Run. If you get to Saginaw, you've gone too far. While you're there, you'll want to mosey on over to Frankenmuth (about 10 miles), which is world-famous for family style chicken dinners and Bronner's Christmas all-year 'round.

Oops! I forgot to mention you get on I-71 in Louisville to get to I-75.
